I realized that this valuable skill would allow me to create a profitable lifestyle around whatever I’m most passionate about.

You see, direct response copywriting is all about making sales.

Direct response copywriters will ALWAYS be in red-hot demand because companies will always need help getting more customers, selling their products & services and growing their businesses.

If you want to make 6 figures as a sought-after direct response copywriter, this ultimate guide will give you a clear path to get there in the shortest amount of time possible.

In this post…

I’m going to reveal what a direct response copywriter does, how much you can expect to earn in 2024, and a step-by-step blueprint for getting paid to write direct response copy ASAP.

What is Direct Response Copywriting?

Man on laptop

So, what exactly is direct response copywriting?

It’s VERY simple.

Direct response copywriting is salesmanship in print & salesmanship multiplied.

You see, instead of selling face-to-face, to one person (or a few) at a time, you are selling to hundreds, even THOUSANDS, of people through the words you type.

The main purpose of direct response copywriting is to get a response out of your readers (hence the name - “direct response”)

What type of response?

Click a link, buy a product or service, open an email, generate an email subscriber, and much more.

When do you want this response?

The purpose of direct response copy is to get readers to take a specific action NOW – not whenever they feel like it.

To quickly learn the basics of direct response copywriting, see this detailed blog post for beginners: The Ultimate Guide to Direct Response Copywriting (Write Copy that Sells)

What Does a Direct Response Copywriter Do?

woman with money and laptop

Direct response copywriters usually work from home and spend the majority of their days researching, writing and collaborating with marketing, sales and design teams.

The main “mediums” you’ll write for include:

1. Print Advertising

This includes direct mailers, newspaper ads, magazine ads, and other printed materials designed to capture your reader's attention and generate a response.

2. Digital Marketing

Direct response copywriters create content for online platforms such as websites, landing pages, email campaigns, social media ads, and online banners. They focus on compelling calls to action to encourage users to click, sign up, or make a purchase.

3. Television and Radio Scripts

direct response copywriters may write scripts for commercials and infomercials, aiming to engage viewers or listeners and drive them to take immediate action.

4. Direct Mail

This involves sending physical promotional materials, such as postcards, brochures, and catalogs, directly to potential customers. The copy aims to persuade recipients to respond by making a purchase or taking another desired action.

5. Email Marketing

Copywriters create persuasive email content to encourage subscribers to open, read, and take action. This could involve making a purchase, signing up for an event, or subscribing to a service.

6. Outdoor Advertising

Copy for billboards, posters, transit ads, and other outdoor mediums is designed to capture attention quickly and drive a rapid response.

7. Infomercials and Video Sales Letters (VSLs)

Direct response copywriters may script long-form video content, such as infomercials or video sales letters, to showcase a product or service and drive immediate purchases.

8. Catalogs

For businesses that use catalogs, direct response copywriters craft compelling product descriptions and calls to action to drive sales directly from the catalog.

9. Social Media Ads

Copywriters create concise and persuasive content for social media platforms, aiming to capture the audience's interest and drive them to take action.

10. Direct Response Copy on Websites and Landing Pages

Whether it's the homepage of a website or a dedicated landing page, copywriters focus on creating content that encourages visitors to take specific actions, such as filling out a form, making a purchase, or requesting more information.

The Core Responsibilities of a Direct Response Copywriter

Man carrying earth on his back

1. Understanding Your Audience

Beyond demographics, successful direct response copywriters dive deep into understanding the psychographics of their audience.

What keeps them up at night? What are their aspirations? What problems are they trying to solve? What are their biggest desires? What new lives are they fantasizing about?

By answering these questions, your copy becomes a personalized solution for your ideal reader.

2. Compelling Headlines

Your headline is the first impression you make with your readers.

The ONLY goal of your headlines is to grab your ideal reader’s attention and get them to read your first sentence.

Want to learn more about how to craft headlines? Read this detailed guide on how to write attention-grabbing headlines.

3. Convincing Copy

The art of persuasion is rooted in empathy.

You sell with emotions.

Your copy should not only highlight the features of a product or service but, more importantly, address the needs and desires of your audience.

Devour this post to learn all about the art of persuasion and how to motivate your readers to buy from you.

4. Call to Action (CTA)

The CTA is the finish line of your copy.

It's not just a button; it's an invitation.

Clearly communicate the next step you want your audience to take.

Whether it's making a purchase, filling out a form, or subscribing to a newsletter, your CTA should provide clear instructions on what to do next and give them a reason to respond NOW (discounts, limited number of products available, restate the main benefits, create FOMO, etc.)

5. Testing and Optimization

Direct response copywriting is a science as much as it is an art.

A/B testing is your ally.

Continuously experiment with different elements of your copy – headlines, CTA placement, offers – and use data to refine and optimize for better performance.

Good copy is objective.

It either worked or it didn’t.

Analyze the data to find out and optimize accordingly.

Read this blog post to learn how to quickly increase your rates as a freelance ecommerce copywriter… The Ultimate Guide to Freelance Copywriting Rates in 2024 (How Much Should YOU Charge?)

How Much Should an Ecommerce Copywriter Charge?

On average, freelance ecommerce copywriters charge between $50 and $150 per hour, or per project, depending on the scope of the project and the clients you’re writing for.

Different ways to price your services:

  1. Hourly Rates: If you're billing hourly, consider the time spent researching, writing, and revising the copy. Factor in your expertise and the value you bring to the client.
  2. Per Project Rates: For larger projects like website overhauls or extensive product launches, quoting a flat fee for the entire project may be easier. Consider the time commitment, research, and revisions required for the project.
  3. Retainer Agreements: Some freelance ecommerce copywriters work on a retainer basis, providing a set number of hours per week or month to a client. This is where the real money is to be made.
  4. Consider Additional Services: If you offer additional services such as SEO optimization, social media management, or email campaign creation, factor these into your pricing. Clients often appreciate comprehensive solutions that address multiple aspects of their online presence.

Your rates should reflect the value you bring to the client.

Regularly assess and adjust your rates as you gain experience and build a strong portfolio.

Building lasting relationships with satisfied clients can also lead to referrals and increased earning potential in the long run.

For more info on how to price your services and how to quickly raise your prices, see this detailed blog post.

7 Ecommerce Copywriting Best Practices (With Tips)

Best practice

#1 Understand Your Audience

Tailor your copy to resonate with your target demographic. Research their preferences, pain points, and language to create content that speaks directly to them.

  • Detailed Persona Development: Go beyond basic demographic information and create detailed buyer personas. Understand your audience's preferences, motivations, pain points, and the language they use.
  • Segmentation Strategies: Tailor your copy to different segments within your target audience. Recognize that different customer groups may have unique needs and preferences. Personalizing your messaging based on these segments can significantly enhance engagement.
  • Customer Journey Mapping: Map out the customer journey to identify touchpoints where your copy can make the most impact. Align your messaging with the customer's mindset at each stage, from awareness to consideration and finally, conversion.

#2 SEO Mastery

Incorporate relevant keywords naturally into your copy to improve search engine rankings. Strike a balance between SEO optimization and maintaining a conversational tone.

  • Keyword Research Excellence: Invest time in thorough keyword research to identify terms and phrases your target audience is using. Use tools like Google Keyword Planner or SEMrush to discover high-ranking keywords relevant to your products.
  • Natural Integration: Incorporate keywords seamlessly into your copy, ensuring they fit naturally within the context. Avoid keyword stuffing, as search engines prioritize user experience. Striking a balance between optimization and readability is crucial.
  • Stay Informed About Algorithm Changes: Search engines continually update their algorithms. Stay informed about these changes and adjust your SEO strategy accordingly. Adapt to new trends, such as the growing importance of user experience signals in rankings.

#3 Compelling Headlines

news headline

Craft attention-grabbing headlines that entice readers to explore further. A strong headline sets the tone for the entire piece and can significantly increase conversion rates.

  • Create Urgency or Curiosity: Craft headlines that evoke a sense of urgency or curiosity. Encourage readers to explore further by hinting at exclusive offers, limited-time promotions, or intriguing product features.
  • Address Customer Pain Points: Identify and address common pain points your audience might have. Craft headlines that position your product or solution as the answer to their challenges, creating an immediate connection.

#4 Emphasize Benefits

Focus on the benefits of the product rather than just listing features. Help the customer visualize how the product will improve their life.

  • Use Clear and Tangible Language: Clearly articulate the benefits of your product using tangible language. Help customers envision how the product will solve their problems or enhance their lives. Focus on outcomes rather than features.
  • Storytelling for Emotional Appeal: Integrate storytelling techniques to create an emotional connection. Share customer success stories or narrate scenarios where your product makes a positive impact. Emotional engagement can significantly influence purchasing decisions.
  • Feature Benefits in Bullet Points: Break down benefits into easy-to-digest bullet points. This enhances readability and allows customers to quickly grasp the value your product offers without being overwhelmed by lengthy paragraphs.

#5 Implement a Persuasive Call-to-Action (CTA)

  • Be Clear and Direct: Craft compelling calls-to-action that leave no room for ambiguity. Clearly communicate the action you want the user to take, whether it's making a purchase, signing up for a newsletter, or exploring a new collection.
  • Instill a Sense of Urgency: Create a sense of urgency or scarcity in your CTAs to prompt immediate action. Phrases like "Limited Time Offer" or "Only a Few Left" can encourage customers to act quickly, reducing the likelihood of procrastination.
  • A/B Test CTAs: Experiment with different language, colors, and placements for your calls-to-action. Conduct A/B testing to identify which variations yield the highest conversion rates. Continuously refine your CTAs based on data-driven insights.

#6 Optimize for Readability

  • Use Concise and Clear Language: Keep your sentences and paragraphs short and to the point. Use plain language that is easy for your audience to understand. Avoid jargon or complex terminology that might alienate potential customers.
  • Utilize Subheadings and Bullets: Break down your content using subheadings and bullet points. This not only enhances the visual appeal of your copy but also makes it easier for readers to scan and quickly extract key information. Attention spans online are short, so make your content easily digestible.
  • Prioritize Mobile Optimization: With a significant portion of online shopping occurring on mobile devices, ensure that your copy is mobile-friendly. Test the responsiveness of your product pages and emails on various devices to guarantee a seamless experience for users across platforms.

#7 Create a Unique Value Proposition (UVP)

  • Clearly Define What Sets You Apart: Develop a concise and compelling Unique Value Proposition that clearly communicates what makes your products or brand unique. Highlight key differentiators such as quality, innovation, or exclusive offerings. Ensure that your UVP is consistent across all your copy.
  • Address Customer Concerns: Anticipate and address potential objections or concerns your customers may have. Incorporate reassuring language that emphasizes product quality, satisfaction guarantees, or hassle-free returns. Building trust is crucial for converting potential customers into actual buyers.
  • Leverage Social Proof: Integrate customer testimonials, reviews, and ratings strategically into your copy. Showcase positive experiences from real customers to reinforce the credibility of your brand and products. This social proof can be a powerful motivator for prospective buyers.

The Ultimate Guide to Copywriting Headlines (How to Write Headlines that Sell)

Jan 07, 2024 by Jeremy Mac
News headline

It’s no secret…

Headlines are the most important aspect of copywriting.

Want proof?

If this blog’s headline did not grab your attention, you wouldn’t be reading this right now.

The same is true with everything you write for clients.

If your copywriting headlines do not grab your client’s ideal reader’s attention, they will not read a single word you write.

And if they don’t read your copy, you will NEVER make enough money to live your copywriting dream life.

No client in their right mind would pay a copywriter who cannot get them good results and provide value.

But you don’t have to worry about that.

Because after you read this post, you will have the raging confidence to bang out attention-grabbing headlines that get read like a bestseller.

In this blog post…

I’m going to cover what a copywriting headline is, why copywriting headlines are so important, 11 insider tips for writing better headlines, 10 copywriting formulas to quickly bang out world-class headlines and the 100 best copywriting headlines of all time to model after.

What is a Copywriting Headline?

Gary Halbert Headline

A copywriting headline is simply the first few words that readers see when they come across your content.

Headlines are used for all types of mediums.

For example:

  • Emails (subject lines)
  • Social media content
  • Advertisements
  • Website pages
  • And much more

In the wise words of Joseph Sugarman (A-list copywriter):

The one and only job of your headline is to grab the attention of your ideal readers and get them to read your first sentence.

That’s it.

Why are Copywriting Headlines SOOO Important?

Cat reading

It’s widely known amongst top copywriters that headlines are the MOST important part of your copy.

Because if your headline does not grab your ideal reader’s attention, they will not read, respond or buy from you.

Often, copywriters spend 80% of their time writing headlines.

I write dozens (sometimes HUNDREDS) of headlines per copywriting assignment before selecting the best one.

You’ll want to learn, study and practice writing headlines throughout your career.

The stronger your headline game is, the more value you’ll provide clients.

And the more value you provide them, the more money they’ll pay you.

Simple math.

11 Tips for Writing Better Copywriting Headlines

Tip jar

#1. Novelty in News Headlines

David Ogilvy once said that “new” is one of the most powerful concepts in advertising.

Humans are ADDICTED to new.

Think of all the NEW stories (and headlines) brought to us each day by CNN, FOX and MSNBC.

Here’s you can profit from what’s “NEW”:

Grab your reader’s attention by emphasizing the “new” in your client’s product with innovative concepts, features, benefits and stories.

2 examples from successful ads:

  • "Now! Revealed For The First Time Ever! The Amazing Blackjack Secret Of A Las Vegas Mystery Man!
  • "Doctor Reports New "Miracle" Diet Cures Arthritis"

#2. Mastering How-to Headlines

Keyboard button says "benefits"

Your readers only do what they WANT to do.

Grab your reader’s attention by tapping into your audience's self-interest.

These headlines promise readers the key emotional benefits derived from your product or service.

Start with the magic words "how to" and unveil the desired results.

2 examples from successful ads:

  • "How to Win Friends and Influence People"
  • "How to Cook the Perfect Steak: A Chef's Guide to Grilling"

#3. Evoke Curiosity in Headlines

Curious lemur

Ever wonder why horror movie characters march towards spooky sounds?

Arousing curiosity in your readers ensures undivided attention.

After all, Gary Halbert, the world’s most famous copywriter, revealed that curiosity is the #1 reason why people buy products (EVEN if they had no prior interest).

Nobody likes clickbait headlines. Don’t betray your reader’s trust. Always deliver on your promise and make your copywriting headline relevant to your message.

2 examples from successful ads:

  • "The Financial Hack That Banks Don't Want You to Know"
  • "Double Your Productivity with This Unconventional Time Management Trick"

#4. Harnessing Emotions through Headlines

Copywriting truth:

You sell with emotions and use logic to justify the purchase.

However, you can also tap into your readers’ emotions to hook their eyeballs.

Here’s how:

Discover the common negative emotions surrounding the BIG problem your product solves and feature them dramatically in your headlines.

Whether it's addressing insecurity, fear, guilt, or shame, tapping into your audience's emotions ensures captivating headlines that demand attention.

2 examples from successful ads:

  • "Are You Ever Tongue-Tied at a Party?"
  • "Do You Make These Mistakes in English?"

#5. Posing Questions in Headlines

A relevant question, asked to the right person, is almost IMPOSSIBLE to ignore.

It’s like fireworks in broad daylight. You just HAVE to pay attention.

Ask relevant questions focused on your reader's self-interest, guiding them toward the answers they seek.

Let your questions create a sense of intrigue that compels your audience to delve deeper into your copy.

2 examples from successful ads:

  • "Who Else Wants a Screen Star Figure?"
  • "Have You a "Worry" Stock?"

#6. Embracing Contrast in Headlines

Black and white shoes

This phenomenon has grabbed our attention since the dawn of man.

Humans had to pay special attention to predators lurking in the midst. So, if we noticed something different (contrasting), we’d shoot into survival mode.

This still has a DEEP impact on our brains today.

Dig deep into your reader’s psyche by adding polar opposites in your headlines.

Big vs small.

Night vs day.

Evil vs good.

And so on.

The more dramatic these opposites are, the easier it is to stop your audience dead in their tracks and draw them into your compelling copy.

2 examples from successful ads:

  • "The Amazing Money-Making Secret of a Desperate Nerd from Ohio!"
  • "How a New Discovery Made a Plain Girl Beautiful"

#7. The Attention-Grabbing Call Out

Woman shouting

Imagine strolling down a bustling city street and spotting a friend in the distance.

How would you grab their attention?

You’d simply shout their name.

Apply the same principle to your copywriting headlines by calling out to your audience.

No. You can’t use their names.

But you CAN use trigger words and refer to your target audiences’ specific situations:

For example:

  • “Calling all left-handed golfers”
  • “For women who struggle with anxiety”
  • “For college players desperately trying to improve their jump shot…”

  • "Who Else Wants Lighter Cake - In Half the Mixing Time?"

#8. Numerical Appeal in Headlines

Capitalizing on the human love for numbers, lists, and exact instructions can be a total game-changer.

Hook your reader's attention by presenting benefits, mistakes to avoid, or reasons to act now in numerical format.

#9. The “Late to Work” Mindset for Writing Killer Headlines

Man late to work

I like to get into this mindset before writing headlines…

You are calling your ideal reader.

You’ve never spoken to them before, but you know that they’d love what you’re selling.

Anyway, they are late to work and speeding like a menace.

You only have ONE sentence to get them to not only not hang up on you, but to pull over to the side of the road and BEG you to tell them more.

What would you say?

(HINT: what you say is FAR more important than how you say it.)

#10. Write to ONE Person

Even though many people will read your copy, you only want to write to ONE person.

Find out WHO your client’s ideal buyer is.

Then, study them like a final exam.

What are their biggest desires?

What frustrating challenges are they trying to overcome?

What interests them most?

What racing thoughts are playing inside their head?

Find this out through research and keep this info in mind when writing headlines.

It’s much easier to grab the attention of one person, who you know very well, versus a crowd of strangers.

#11. Write Multiple Headlines

Most A-list copywriters spend most of their time writing headlines.

They will write dozens of headlines before selecting the best one.

Start new assignments by writing headlines first.

Bang out as many as you can.

Do not stop to edit.

The more you have to work with, the easier it is to find the winner winner, chicken dinner.

                                                                              1. Talk As You Write

The easiest way to write conversational copy is to talk out loud as you write.

Whenever I sit down to write, I blabber like a baby as I clack away at my keyboard.

                                                                              This has several benefits:

                                                                              • Reduces writing time – it’s much faster to write when you’re talking. The words just flow right off your tongue.
                                                                              • Eliminates 80% of the editing process – when you talk as you write, you will naturally have MUCH less garbage to edit.
                                                                              • Reads like a 1:1 conversation – because you are talking, instead of “writing.”

The next time you write, talk out loud.

You’ll be AMAZED at the results.

Understanding your audience is not just about demographics; it's about getting into their minds and hearts.

Imagine your ideal reader as your best friend.

What are their interests, challenges, and aspirations?

Tailor your language, tone, and content to resonate with them on a personal level.

Share content that speaks to their experiences, emotions and interests, creating a sense of relatability.

                                                                              3. Sprinkle Your Copy with "YOU" Language

                                                                              Woman pointing at reader

                                                                              Engagement starts with personalization.

Address your readers directly using "you" and "your."

This small shift in perspective makes your copy feel like a personalized conversation.

It breaks down the barrier between writer and reader, inviting them into a more intimate and relatable experience.

Sprinkle your copy with “YOU” language throughout and you will naturally make your writing more conversational.

                                                                              4. Tell Stories

Humans are wired to love stories.

Share anecdotes, customer testimonials, or behind-the-scenes glimpses of your brand's journey.

Narratives create an emotional connection, making your brand more memorable.

Readers are more likely to engage with content that feels like a story, rather than a sales pitch.

                                                                              5. Keep it Short and Sweet

Conversations are dynamic and don't dwell on a single topic for too long.

Apply the same principle to your copy.

Break down complex information into digestible, bite-sized chunks.

Short sentences and paragraphs maintain a conversational flow, preventing your readers from getting lost in a sea of text.

                                                                              6. Break the Ice with Humor

                                                                              Laughter is a universal language.

Infuse humor into your copy, but tailor it to your brand and audience.

A well-placed joke or witty remark can break the ice, making your content more entertaining, enjoyable and memorable.

Just be sure it aligns with your brand's personality and doesn't overshadow your main message.

                                                                              7. Conversations Aren't Formal: Use Contractions

Formal language can create a stiff barrier between you and your readers.

                                                                              Conversations are informal and relaxed.

Incorporate contractions like "I'm," "you're," and "we're" to make your writing sound more like a chat and less like a corporate memo.

This small tweak contributes to a conversational and approachable tone.

                                                                              8. Think Community: Emphasize "We"

                                                                              Group holding hands

Highlight the collective experience by using the inclusive pronoun "we."

Whether celebrating achievements or addressing challenges, emphasize that you and your audience are on this journey together.

This fosters a sense of community and belonging, making readers feel like valued members of a shared experience.

                                                                              9. Be Yourself, Pimples and All

Authenticity is the cornerstone of conversational copywriting.

                                                                              Be genuine and transparent.

Share not only your successes but also your challenges.

Authenticity creates trust, and trust is the foundation of any meaningful connection.

Let your personality shine through, allowing your readers to see the real, human side of your brand.

                                                                              10. Personal Comments

Gary Halbert taught this conversational copywriting gem.

                                                                              It’s really simple…

In the middle of your writing, add parentheses (like this) filled with personal comments.

Something you are doing, thinking or feeling at the moment of writing.

Here’s an example from The Boron Letters:

“In fact, in my opinion, the best groove to get into is get out of bed, (early) wash your face, brush your teeth, use the bathroom, etc., and then, eat a piece of fruit (I think a banana is the best) and then hit the street!”

This personal touch makes it seem as if Gary is talking to you as he writes. It also breaks up the copy and gives you breathing room (and eye relief).

                                                                              11. Use Slang

I LOVE using slang in my writing (esp my daily emails).

                                                                              Few examples:

                                                                              Buckolas – instead of “money”

Lickity split – instead of “fast”

                                                                              Noggin – instead of “brain”

Not only do these words make your copy more conversational, but they also hook your readers’ attention and shake them out of their complacency because they are unusual.

The unusual commands our attention like thunder.

It’s really easy to do, just add twists to commonly used words and phrases.

If you want to improve your copywriting skills, write as you talk.

                                                                              Even better…

Write like your TARGET AUDIENCE talks.

By writing conversational copy, you will be able to demand higher fees, because you’ll boost sales for your clients.

Want more copywriting tips? Enter your email below:

                                                                              Social media

Social media copywriting is the driving force behind creating persuasive and engaging content for various social media platforms.

However, it goes beyond just writing…

Social media copywriting is about understanding the nuances of each platform, knowing your audience on a deep, personal level, and creating persuasive messages that grab attention, pique interest and drive desired actions (clicks, follows, shares, sales and much more).

Your ability to write attention-grabbing content that resonates with a brand’s core followers and motivates them to take action is essential to your success.

Let me quickly clear your haze:

A-list copywriters know that copywriting is nothing more than salesmanship in print.

But instead of selling face-to-face, you are selling through your writing.

                                                                                                                                                                              And the beauty is…

                                                                                                                                                                              Get results for their clients.

The specific results can vary (although it’s usually to generate more sales or leads), but the ultimate purpose is to make more money.

If you can help your clients grow their business, you will ALWAYS be able to make rockstar money.
