Whenever I see my dog, she’s already staring into my eyes.
We have intense stare offs almost every day that last minutes.
It could be a dominance thing, I don’t know.
But what I do know is, you can never show fear to clients.
I’ll never forget this…
Few years ago, I interviewed with a real estate company for a senior copywriting position.
It was the final round.
And I was ending the interview with the COO of the company.
She asked me how much doughnuts I was looking for.
Without hesitation, I replied “$80,000.”
This was ballsy.
For 2 reasons:
- I had less than 2 years of experience
- The position was listed for $60,000
Then, after the words - “$80,000” - left my mouth, I entered a staring match with the COO.
I swear it lasted a minute or so.
Nobody said a word.
Complete silence.
Then, she finally caved.
And said… “okay, we’ll write up an offer and get back to you.”
Few hours later I received a call – they offered $82,000.
Now, I cannot tell you for certain why they offered $22,000 more than what they were looking to spend. However, I can tell you this…
The WORST thing you can do when negotiating copywriting fees is to show neediness or fear.
These butt ugly traits will get you absolutely killed.
You need to be confident and almost indifferent to their response (even if you feel very non-indifferent inside).
