Do Your Readers Find You Boring?

Recently, I picked up a book called - How to Sell Anything to Anybody – by the world’s greatest salesmen, Joe Girard.

I’ve learned many thangs from Joe over the years (mainly about winning copywriting clients through superior service) and was excited as a newborn puppy to read this highly raved book.

Didn’t make it past page 40.

So freakin boring.

I have a rule when it comes to learning.

If I am bored, at any time, I give myself to permission to quit & move on to something better.

Back when I was listening to one of my fav courses – Matt Furey’s email copywriting course (VERY ENTERTAINING & VALUABLE), he told a story about how Agatha Kristi, famous author, had a rule for reading books.

Her rule was much stricter than mine.

Rule:

If the 1st page didn’t grab her by her ponytail, she’d put the book down.

Point is:

You MUST be interesting.

You must NEVER bore your audience.

If you lose their attention & interest, even for a minute, you are toast.

This could never be truer than right now.

With the dopamine addicts scrolling for their next quick fix on TikTok, FB, Insta, etc. it’s mega important to grab them by their throats & keep them engaged.

If you want to survive as a copywriter, you pique your reader's interest, and keep them interested, in every piece of copy you write.

However, believe it or not, keeping your readers interested, all the way to a sale, is freakin easy.

How?

Dirty tricks.

Jk. Jk. Jk.

Simply talk about what THEY are INTERESTED in.

In the wise words of Jim Camp (world’s most feared negotiator):

“Once inside your prospects world, you will never bore them.”

Guilt Free Selling

Here’s the dog honest truth:

Not 1 day in my 4-year copywriting career have I ever felt guilty about selling my copywriting services (or selling my client's products & service).

I’ve sold products in more niches than I can count on hand and I’ve always felt good about what I do.

Now, I know this is a big issue for a lot of copywriters.

Since the dawn of time, salesmen (aka COPYWRITERS) have had a not-so-great perception by the public.

Slimy.

Liars.

Aggressive.

Selfish.

Are some words that come to mind.

However, I’m here to tell you that there’s an easy way to sell - 100% guilt-free.

In fact, once you absorb this secret, you will not only have a squeaky clean conscious when selling through your writing, but you will also feel GREAT about selling, because you have helped tons of people in the process.

So, what I’m going to do is, I’m going to share the motto I live by for selling anything.

Goes like this:

View yourself as a trusted advisor for your clients.

It is your moral and ethical duty to get your copywriting service into the hands of as many QUALIFIED CLIENTS as possible.

For example:

Let’s say you are selling a new cure for migraines.

And you are 100% confident that this product helps those who are suffering from migraines.

Now, if you were to shy away from selling, to not do the very best selling job you’re capable of, you would be doing yourself AND your customers a HUGE DISSERVICE.

It’s like a doctor refusing treatment needed to relieve your backpain… or diabetes... or CANCER.  

Now, there are some requirements.

You need to KNOW your clients PROBLEMS and you need to provide them a REAL SOLUTION.

Knowing their problems takes some dirty work.

Because you must uncover their REAL problems, pains, fears, wants, needs and so on.

After you know this do or die info, you’ll use it to attract them to you, negotiate new copywriting gigs and provide them tremendous value so they refer everyone they know to you.

Did you know humans are 10x more motivated to move away from pain than they are to move towards pleasure?

It’s true.

And in all of these “tragic” cases, they've created something beautiful out of their suffering.

They have turned their pain into fuel and passion to succeed.

Joe Girard (labeled the greatest car salesmen of all time) had a nightmarish upbringing.

He was constantly abused (physically and mentally) by his father.

Couldn’t hold down a job to save his life.

And was in & out of jail for most of his early adult years.

But instead of laying down and waving the white flag like so many others would do in his shoes, he used his pain to fuel him to break the Genius World Record for cars sold.

I want to leave you with this sparkling gem to ponder because it’s mega important:

Do You Know Your CBAs?

A popular motto us copywriters are taught to live n die by is to follow our ABC'S.

Aka:

“Always Be Closing”

However, I think there’s a lot of confusion from copywriters & gurus when it comes to closing.

Confusion that, in most cases, does more harm for your piggy bank than good.

Here’s what I mean:

If you’ve ever read a sales book, you’ve probably noticed a good chunk of the pages are dedicated to closing.

Closing by using sneaky & pushy techniques, phrases and power words for closing the sale.

However, I STRONGLY urge against using such techniques.

You see, the best salesmen “close” differently.

They don’t rely on such Teletubby tactics.

They close the deal before they’ve even sat down with their prospects.

And when they DO sit down, their prospects are already 9/10 presold on whatever they’re selling.

Here’s a real life example to sharpen my pencil:

Few years ago, I wanted to write for a big client in the cannabis industry.

However, I had no experience or connections.  

But I landed the client anyways.

How?

By following my CBA’s.

Aka:

“Close Before Asking”

In other words, I strategically worked on closing this dream client BEFORE ever reaching out to them.

Quick summary of what I did:

Spent grueling hours researching the company, the CEO, their customers, etc. – to get inside their minds like a stalker and uncover their biggest problems - related to growing their business & copywriting (the service I was offering).

Spent a month or so warming em up, by engaging with their content on multiple social media platforms.

Bought a few of their products and sent raving reviews.

Then, when the time was ready, sent out a few VERY PERSONALIZED emails to the CEO & Director of Marketing.

Then, on a call with the CEO, I “sold” my services by building a big painful vision of their problem (which I got from research & asking strategic ?s) and naturally tying in my solution (copywriting & marketing services).

BAM.

Landed this very lucrative client.

The secret?

I was closing from the very beginning, middle and end.

The same is true with EVERYTHING YOU do.

I do not use the latest, seggsiest, killa tactics passed around like a sorority girl by all the copywriting & marketing gooruus.

Nope.

I like to stick to the tried n true direct response principles used by the top copywriter's who've paved this industry.

Why?

Because this stuff simply works.

It’s reliable as grandmas cookies.

And it will continue to work tomorrow, a year from now, and for as long as humans roam this green earth.

This stuff works for one simple reason:

Good copywriting, at its naked root, is mere PSYCHOLOGY.

It’s getting into the minds (and hearts) of your client's target audience, then, once in their world, simply bringing them to your client's product.

So, as promised, without a doubt, the NUMBER 1 word in copywriting is….

YOU.

While back I was reading a glorious copywriting book written by Victor Schwab (one of the founding fathers of direct response advertising) and he explained the importance of using the word YOU in sales copy.

He also explained this great concept called “WIIFM” (What’s In It For Me).

Meaning:

Your prospect does not care about YOU.

They don’t give a dog’s blue bottom about how cool your product is, how many awards you’ve won, how many years you’ve been in business and so on.

The ONLY thing they care about is WHAT’S IN IT FOR THEM.

What do THEY get by reading your copy…

What do THEY get by buying the product or service…

Why will THEY benefit from choosing your client's company over the trazillion other brands just like em.

I believe that the first step in writing killah copy is really, truly knowing your target audience better then they know themselves.

To know what they’re feeling, thinking and experiencing BEFORE you ever write a single word.

To know their biggest problems and what THEY WANT more than anything (related to what your clients product or service.)

Once you uncover this info, you will never struggle to write money-oozing copy again.

You’ll blow away any “competition” and have others looking at you like your using some voodoo spells.

But you aren’t.

You’re simply using a copywriting PRINCIPLE embedded in human psychology, that works like crackpipes.

Doing shit you hate.

The remedy - choose the few lead gen strategies you ENJOY doing, and STICK WITH THEM.

 

Mistake #4…

Wreaking of need.

Neediness is the death of all sales.

Remove all odor of need when dealing with prospects & clients.

 

Mistake #5…

Building a product-to-prospect bridge.

Remedy:

Flip it around.

Build a bridge starting with your prospect to your product (your copywriting services).

Meaning:

Get inside your prospects world. Paint a vivid vision of their problems, pains, frustrations, wants… and… simply tie in why YOU are the copywriter who can help them relieve their pain and achieve their dreams.

Alright buster.

Here are 10 questions to answer to know your market better than your competitors.

These are straight outta the magnificent book “ultimate sales letter” by Dan Kennedy (aka the professor of harsh reality).

  1. What keeps them awake at night, indigestion boiling up their esophagus, eyes open, staring at the ceiling?
  2. What are they afraid of?
  3. What are they angry about? Who are they angry at?
  4. What are their top three daily frustrations?
  5. What trends are occurring and will occur in their business or lives?
  6. What do they secretly, ardently desire most?
  7. Is there a built-in bias to the way they make decisions? (Example: engineers = exceptionally analytical.)
  8. Do they have their own language?
  9. Who else is selling something similar to them, and how?
  10. Who else has tried selling them something similar, and how has that effort failed?

Answer these questions (relevant to copywriting). Study them. Know them. And PROFIT from them.

Always Being Available for Clients is Murdering Your Income

Most copywriters, business owners and employees blindly follow this “rule”.

However, I think it’s dumber than a bottle of sugar-free sweet tea.

In fact, if you study the REAL successes in business, you already know that being “available” for clients, round the clock, is a BIG NO NO.

I’ll never forget this valuable lesson Dan Kennedy told…

“No one seeks advice from the guru sitting at the bottom of the mountain.”

Nope.

They seek advice from the wise guru sitting way up high on the mountain top.

The guru who is VERY exclusive and hard to reach.
