A popular motto us copywriters are taught to live n die by is to follow our ABC'S.


“Always Be Closing”

However, I think there’s a lot of confusion from copywriters & gurus when it comes to closing.

Confusion that, in most cases, does more harm for your piggy bank than good.

Here’s what I mean:

If you’ve ever read a sales book, you’ve probably noticed a good chunk of the pages are dedicated to closing.

Closing by using sneaky & pushy techniques, phrases and power words for closing the sale.

However, I STRONGLY urge against using such techniques.

You see, the best salesmen “close” differently.

They don’t rely on such Teletubby tactics.

They close the deal before they’ve even sat down with their prospects.

And when they DO sit down, their prospects are already 9/10 presold on whatever they’re selling.

Here’s a real life example to sharpen my pencil:

Few years ago, I wanted to write for a big client in the cannabis industry.

However, I had no experience or connections.  

But I landed the client anyways.


By following my CBA’s.


“Close Before Asking”

In other words, I strategically worked on closing this dream client BEFORE ever reaching out to them.

Quick summary of what I did:

Spent grueling hours researching the company, the CEO, their customers, etc. – to get inside their minds like a stalker and uncover their biggest problems - related to growing their business & copywriting (the service I was offering).

Spent a month or so warming em up, by engaging with their content on multiple social media platforms.

Bought a few of their products and sent raving reviews.

Then, when the time was ready, sent out a few VERY PERSONALIZED emails to the CEO & Director of Marketing.

Then, on a call with the CEO, I “sold” my services by building a big painful vision of their problem (which I got from research & asking strategic ?s) and naturally tying in my solution (copywriting & marketing services).


Landed this very lucrative client.

The secret?

I was closing from the very beginning, middle and end.

The same is true with EVERYTHING YOU do.

While back I was reading a glorious copywriting book written by Victor Schwab (one of the founding fathers of direct response advertising) and he explained the importance of using the word YOU in sales copy.

He also explained this great concept called “WIIFM” (What’s In It For Me).


Your prospect does not care about YOU.

They don’t give a dog’s blue bottom about how cool your product is, how many awards you’ve won, how many years you’ve been in business and so on.

The ONLY thing they care about is WHAT’S IN IT FOR THEM.

What do THEY get by reading your copy…

What do THEY get by buying the product or service…

Why will THEY benefit from choosing your client's company over the trazillion other brands just like em.

I believe that the first step in writing killah copy is really, truly knowing your target audience better then they know themselves.

To know what they’re feeling, thinking and experiencing BEFORE you ever write a single word.

To know their biggest problems and what THEY WANT more than anything (related to what your clients product or service.)

Once you uncover this info, you will never struggle to write money-oozing copy again.

You’ll blow away any “competition” and have others looking at you like your using some voodoo spells.

But you aren’t.

You’re simply using a copywriting PRINCIPLE embedded in human psychology, that works like crackpipes.

Believe it or not, there’s ONE skill that wipes the floor clean when it comes to freelance copywriting success.

Market research.

Here are 10 questions to answer to know your market better than your competitors.

These are straight outta the magnificent book “ultimate sales letter” by Dan Kennedy (aka the professor of harsh reality).

  1. What keeps them awake at night, indigestion boiling up their esophagus, eyes open, staring at the ceiling?
  2. What are they afraid of?
  3. What are they angry about? Who are they angry at?
  4. What are their top three daily frustrations?
  5. What trends are occurring and will occur in their business or lives?
  6. What do they secretly, ardently desire most?
  7. Is there a built-in bias to the way they make decisions? (Example: engineers = exceptionally analytical.)
  8. Do they have their own language?
  9. Who else is selling something similar to them, and how?
  10. Who else has tried selling them something similar, and how has that effort failed?

Answer these questions (relevant to copywriting). Study them. Know them. And PROFIT from them.

Always Being Available for Clients is Murdering Your Income

How we’re taught to always be available for clients and respond to their beck n call.

Most copywriters, business owners and employees blindly follow this “rule”.

However, I think it’s dumber than a bottle of sugar-free sweet tea.

In fact, if you study the REAL successes in business, you already know that being “available” for clients, round the clock, is a BIG NO NO.

I’ll never forget this valuable lesson Dan Kennedy told…

“No one seeks advice from the guru sitting at the bottom of the mountain.”


They seek advice from the wise guru sitting way up high on the mountain top.

The guru who is VERY exclusive and hard to reach.

Who has you wait longer and pay more, if you want his expert advice.
