Copywriting Principle #1: The Only Goal of Copywriting

The SINGULAR goal of copywriting is to generate a response.

What kind of response?

99% of the time: sales or leads.

This usually unties beginner’s shoelaces and trips them up… but… good copywriting is NOT good writing.

It’s good salesmanship.

Copywriting is sales multiplied (instead of selling face-to-face to one person, you are selling online to thousands at a time).

The same principles that salesmen use to sell to prospects apply to copywriting.

These 5 copywriting principles were all founded by copywriters who understood this, studied salesmanship and figured out how to apply it to their writing.


Copywriting Principle #2: Write to Your Ideal Reader

Because everything you write must be aligned with what your ideal reader wants.

You are not writing to a crowd.

You are writing to one person (Your client’s ideal buyer.)

And to write effective copy that elicits a response, you must research your ideal reader like a madman.

Find out what they want, what problems they face, what they’re currently going through, what conversations are playing inside their mind… and… let all of this vital info guide every word that you write.

If you do, you will write copy that is engaging, interesting and persuasive to your IDEAL READER.


Copywriting Principle #3: Grab Your Reader’s Attention

After you know WHO you’re writing to and have done enough research, the first step to writing great copy is to write an attention-grabbing headline.

Listen good, my salty friend:

The ONLY job of your headline is to grab your ideal reader’s attention and get them to read your first sentence.

That’s it.

How-to Headline

The How-to headline offers your readers something they want and can get from you.

What is the biggest benefit of your product?

What does this main benefit DO for your readers?

What new life will they live now that they’ve gotten what they want most?

Once you figure this out…

Simply start your headline with the words “how to”… then… follow with the desired result.


How to [achieve desired result]

2 examples from successful ads:

  • How to win friends and influence people
  • How to launch your own business for under $1,000 and make $25,000-$50,000 a year!

The Curiosity Headline

Arousing your readers’ curiosity is an extremely effective way to grab their attention and drag their eyeballs to your next sentence.

4 idiot-proof ways to add curiosity to your headlines:

  • Tell readers what NOT to do
  • List common mistakes they’re probably making
  • Give controversial solutions. (I.E. how to achieve desired result by doing something they think would not possibly work.)
  • Reveal SECRETS (everyone loves secrets, they wrench on our curiosity)

2 examples:

  • "The secret of making people like you"
  • "What not to do on airplanes"

Question Headlines

Questions act like giant red stop signs to our eyes.

The next time you write a headline, ask a relevant question your readers would like to see answered.

Ask relevant questions related to what your reader is interested in.

Question headline examples:

  • "Who else wants a screen star figure?"
  • "Do you make these mistakes in English?"

Numbers Headline

Capture your reader’s attention by listing the number of benefits, mistakes to avoid, reasons why to act now, etc.

Begin your headline with numbers, like this:

  • 10 ways to…
  • 8 reasons why…
  • 3 mistakes to avoid…
  • 25 benefits of…


  • "7 Ways To Collect Your Unpaid Bills"

News Headline

We crave “new” like Homer Simpson craves donuts.

New is exciting!

Look for new concepts, features and stories when researching your client’s product and company.

When you find something “new”, use it in your headline to grab your reader’s undivided attention.

Start your headline with words like:

  • “Introducing”
  • “Announcing”
  • “New”
  • “Breaking”
  • “Now”
  • “At last”
  • “Breakthrough”

Copywriting Principle #4: Sell Benefits, Not Features

Another timeless copywriting principle is to sell the benefits of your product, NOT the boring features.

A feature is the characteristic or attribute of a product that describes what the product is and what it is made out of.

A benefit explains how the features of a product directly translate into something positive for the customer.

However, it’s much deeper than this.

Often, copywriters will add benefits throughout their copy (which is a must) but they will never tap into the REAL benefits that sell like hotcakes.


They’ll find the direct benefits from a feature.

Which are simply cause and effect.

You take a diet supplement. You lose 5 pounds.

But the direct benefit is not what motivates your readers to buy.

You have to sell on emotion and paint a bright vision of their new life.

It’s what this direct benefit DOES for them that matters.

For example:

Direct benefit = you lose 5 pounds

The REAL benefit = you will find true love at last!.... or… you will feel confident again in your skin… or… you will get others to notice you and shower you with compliments.

These benefits are EMOTIONAL.

By uncovering the REAL emotional benefits that your product/service DO for your readers, you will instantly write more persuasive copy.


Copywriting Principle #5: Ask for Action

So many copywriters write AMAZING, persuasive copy.

But then, they shoot themselves in their pinky toe because they fail to tell their readers what to do next.

Copywriting is all about getting ACTION.

To do so…

You must add a call to action (CTA) at the end of your sales message.

Here’s some quick tips to boost response rates:

  • Tell them exactly what to do next. Give them step-by-step instructions.
  • Make it stupidly simple to take the action you desire.
  • Give them an incentive to act NOW – discount, limited number of products available, re-framing everything they’ll gain or miss out on.

The key to turning readers into buyers is to give direct, clear and concise instructions on what to do next.

Effective copy solves problems.

This exercise sharpens your ability to position your product or service as the ultimate solution.


Identify a common problem your audience faces and craft copy that positions your offering as the logical solution.


  • Problem: "Struggling to stay organized?"
  • Solution: "Our organizational tools make it easy for you to stay organized throughout your busy day so you can get more done, in less time."


Copywriting Exercise #10: Testimonial Tightrope

Before readers are ready to buy, they must trust you and believe your claims.

A great way to build trust is to show your readers you are one of them. Testimonials are a great way to achieve this.


Write copy as if a satisfied customer is endorsing your product or service.


Write a “before and after” story of using your product.

Highlight the common challenges, pains, frustrations, and any other negative emotion that your average reader faces when trying to overcome this problem, and then explain how your life has changed after using your product.

This exercise will get you thinking in terms of your readers and what they are currently experiencing and feeling.


Copywriting Exercise #11: Question Quotient


Relevant questions grab attention & engage readers.

This exercise challenges you to craft copy around a series of intriguing questions.


Grab your reader’s attention by asking them a relevant question


  • "Want to lose 25 pounds before summer?"


    Copywriting Exercise #12: Metaphors

      Metaphors create vision and help drive your point home.

      Telling a simple one-sentence metaphor can persuade your readers much more effectively than a brick wall of text.

          Good copy creates mental movies in your reader’s minds.

          The easiest way to create “word imagery” is to tickle your reader’s 5 senses:

          • Touch
          • Taste
          • Hear
          • See
          • Smell


          Write descriptive sentences for each of our 5 senses


          • Watch as heads turn as you walk by
          • Hear endless compliments from coworkers
          • Feel confident in your new skin
          • Bathe in the relaxing aroma of peppermint and lavender

            Copywriting Exercise #14: Jargon Juggle

              The majority of your readers do not understand jargon.

              So, to avoid alienating readers, either cut jargon altogether or add parenthesis (explaining what this jargon means in simple, easy-to-understand language)


              Click-through-rate (the percent of users who click your ad)

                          Write down a big list of every possible objection your readers might have.

                          Does your client lack credentials?

                          After you have a big list of potential objections…

                          1. Talk Out Loud While You Write

                          This nifty trick will double your writing speed TODAY… GUARANTEED.

                          Here’s what you do:

                          The next time you sit down to write…

                          Talk out loud as your fingers slam each letter on your keyboard.

                          Why does this help you write faster?

                          Because hoomans are natural talkers.


                          We are NOT natural writers.

                          Plus, 80%+ of your editing job will be completely erased because talking out loud wipes out a lot of odd sentences, weird phrases and unreadable garbage.


                          2. Research Like a Lab Geek

                          Put on your white lab coat and getsa researching!

                          I like to spend a few days on research BEFORE I write a single word.


                          As a copywriter, your real job is to uncover your reader’s biggest desires, pains, problems, hopes, etc. and to write about them in the most persuasive and engaging way.

                          And, you find all this critical info out from research.

                          If you spend enough time digging, it will be 10x easier when you are ready to write.

                          Words will fly right out of your brain and onto your computer screen.

                          Good copywriting always starts with your reader and enters their world.


                          3. Clear Your Mind Before You Write

                          Another way to write lightning quick is to clear your mind’s junk.

                          Here’s what I like to do BEFORE I write:

                          • Meditate for 10 minutes
                          • Ride a stationary bike for 30 minutes
                          • Load up on fruits and vegetables
                          • Slurp down 2 big glasses of water
                          • Eat dark chocolate instead of coffee (gives me clear energy without jitters)
                          • And go outside for 10 minutes or so whenever it’s warm enough

                          However, this is not a one-size-fits-all type of thang.

                          Do whatever works for you.

                          But once you find out what helps you clear your mind, make a daily habit of doing it BEFORE you write.

                          Speaking of habits…


                          4. Write Daily


                          Want to become a better writer?

                          Want to write faster than a cheetah?

                          Write DAILY.

                          This obvious “secret” made the biggest difference in my writing speed and ability.

                          Loooong time ago, I made a daily habit of writing copy.

                          You see, the more you write, and the more frequently you write, the better your writing will be.

                          Plus, the more you will earn because money is attracted to speed.


                            5. Let it All Flow Out

                              After you’ve done enough research and are ready to start your first draft…

                              DO NOT EDIT as you write.

                              Write. Write. Write.

                              Keep going.

                              Keep pushing.

                              Do not stop until you’re finished.

                              Yes, it will read like mumbo jumbo.

                              But this is how every top copywriter approaches the first draft.

                              The goal is to let all your emotions, thoughts and ideas flow out onto paper.

                              If you edit during the first draft, you will jam up the creative process and it will take you FOREVER to write.

                              Good copywriting is not written in the first draft (or 2nd, or 3rd).

                              I learned this the hard way.

                              For a few months, I would write a sentence, and then edit it.

                              Then write another sentence, then stop. And go over it until it was sparkling clean.

                              This was AGONIZING.

                              It took me FOREVER to write even a 100-word email.

                              Don’t make this mistake.


                                6. Write to a Friend


                                  This is more about writing good copy, but it will help you write faster too…

                                  Whenever I write, I imagine I am sitting down at a bar and talking to a good friend.

                                  This is helpful because good copy is conversational.

                                  Good copywriting should read as if you are hearing from a close friend with interesting news to share.

                                  Use simple words, simple language, slang, short sentences, short paragraphs and short words.

                                  Do NOT slap on your “writer’s hat” and try to sound all high and mighty to impress.

                                  Sophisticated, humorous and clever writers do not make it in this game.

                                  Only salesmen do.

                                  And salesmen use everyday, friendly, conversational language.


                                    7. The 33.33-Minute Productivity Hack

                                      I learned this nifty productivity hack from legendary copywriter, Eugene Schwartz.

                                      This helps with eliminating writer’s block and writing EXTREMELY fast.


                                      Whenever Eugene sat down to write, he set a 33.33-minute timer.

                                      He wrote with laser focus until his timer dinged.

                                      Then, he stopped what he was doing and took a short break.

                                      He’d refill coffee, walk his dog, shave, etc.

                                      Then, after 10ish minutes, he’d go back to writing for another 33.33 minutes.

                                      He repeated this process until he was done with whatever he was working on.

                                      There’s 2 MAJOR benefits of doing this…

                                      1. Writing under strict deadlines forces you to write VERY FAST. Whenever I write, I set a timer (The time I set varies for what I’m working on. For example, for emails I set a 7-minute timer).
                                      2. This creates a habit of focused work. Eugene shared how he learned this productivity-boosting tip from Buddhist monks. The key: write in the same location, preferably around the same time each day, and work without distraction. Quickly, you’ll build a habit of laser-focused work.

                                      The next time you write…

                                      Set a 33.33-minute timer.

                                      Do not stop writing until it goes off.

                                      By doing this…

                                      You will bang out copy much faster than you are now.


                                        8. Write to ONE Person


                                          This may sound contrary, but you want to write for ONE person.


                                          Hundreds, thousands, even millions will read your writing.


                                          You only care about one person.


                                          Your client’s ideal buyer.

                                          Everything you write MUST be aligned with their interests.

                                          After all, this is the remedy to boring copy:

                                          Write about what your reader is interested in.

                                          When you write to your ideal reader, a huge boulder is lifted from your achy back.

                                          Because you do not have to waste time trying to please everyone.

                                          You just have to please “one person”.

                                          Writing to your ideal reader is the key to writing good copy.


                                            9. Take a Break

                                              How does taking breaks help me write good copy?

                                              Why would it help me write faster?

                                              Here’s why bud…

                                              A big chunk of writing copy is coming up with big ideas.

                                              And the best way to do so is to let your subconscious mind work its magic.

                                              After you stuff your subconscious mind with the info it needs (from research), take a day off BEFORE writing.

                                              Do something fun…

                                              Go to the movies with a date, play a game of pick-up basketball with some friends, go fishing.

                                              Do ANYTHING besides work on this project.

                                              Often, you will be hit by big ideas as you are having fun on your day off.

                                              When you do, WRITE THEM DOWN.


                                              Taking breaks also gives you a fresh pair of eyeballs to use when reviewing your copy during the editing process.


                                                10. Banish Perfectionism


                                                  Your new motto for writing copy:

                                                   “Good is good enough.”

                                                  Hate to break it to you, but… your copy will never be “perfect.”

                                                  And you can waste countless hours, days, even weeks trying to create a Bob Ross masterpiece.

                                                  Instead, strive for good.

                                                  To be honest…

                                                  You will earn far more money from writing tons of “good” copy, than you would from writing a few homeruns.

                                                                                                                      In fact, I believe it’s one of the BEST times to get into copywriting.

                                                                                                                      Because REAL copywriters, who know how to sell and can get results for their clients, will be a luxury.

                                                                                                                      I believe that copywriters who do NOT use AI, will have a SERIOUS advantage over their competition (now, and even more so in the near future).

                                                                                                                      The vast majority of copywriters and companies are absolutely murdering their imagination, creativity and critical thinking.

                                                                                                                      When you are one of the lone copywriters left who doesn’t mindlessly plug in prompts to a robot, you will stand out from the crowd and attract clients to you like a magnet

                                                                                                                      If you take the time to learn, practice and write direct response copy (the stuff that sells), and continuously improve your skills & knowledge, you will be so far ahead of everyone else it won’t be funny.

                                                                                                                      I think copywriters who rely on AI to write their sales copy are making a GRAVE MISTAKE.


                                                                                                                      There are several ways I use AI to help me write better content and grow my freelance business.

                                                                                                                      I use AI (mainly chatGPT) to help me write content like social media posts and blog posts.

                                                                                                                      AI writes the first draft. Then, I improve upon it by using my copywriting knowledge and unique writing style.


                                                                                                                      I use a handful of AI tools and apps to help me get more done, in less time.
